Our seasonal flu clinics are starting in October 2011

Not sure if you are eligible for a free NHS flu jab?
The seasonal flu vaccine is offered free of charge to anyone who is over six months of age and has one of the following medical conditions:chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, such as severe asthma, COPD or bronchitis
chronic heart disease, such as heart failure
chronic kidney disease
chronic liver disease
chronic neurological disease, such as stroke, TIA, polio syndrome
diabetes
a weakened immune system due to conditions, such as HIV or AIDs, or treatments that suppress the immune system, such as chemotherapy

The following at risk groups are also eligible:

Are 65 years of age or over

are pregnant

are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility

are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill

are a frontline health or social care worker

Cancelling your Appointment

If you are unable to attend an appointment with one of the doctors or nurses, please telephone or use the electronic booking system to cancel your appointment.

Non attendance

During January 2012, 77 patients failed to attend their doctor's appointment and 34 patients failed to attend their nurse's appointment. Please could we ask you to cancel your appointment if you feel you no longer need it.

Please contact the surgery to get the results of any test that you have had done between 12.00 and 5pm.

Routine blood, urine and swab results usually take around 3-5 working days to be processed and reported. If you need a test done please ensure your appoinment is before 3pm, otherwise your sample will not be collected until the following day.

The results for X-rays and ultrasounds take 7 days and cervical smears take 8-10 weeks.

Can we contact you in an emergency? We may to contact you urgently pending the results of blood tests or investigations. You may need to be admitted as an emergency to hospital.

Please help us to help you by always notifiying us of your change of address, telephone or mobile number. If you haven't got a phone contact a contact number of a friend, neighbour or relative would be helpful.

Please could you help us to help you by checking you have enough medications before you go away? We do require 48 hours to process a prescription.

Measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Family Planning & Cervical Smears

Please book via the receptionist, with the doctor or the nurse for either of these services. You need to ensure that you are midway through your cycle at the time of your smear.

Chlamydia Testing

Chlamydia (kla-mid-ee-a) is the most common STI with 1-in-12 young people infected!

DID YOU KNOW

• Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI)
• 1 in 10 active under 25 year olds will have Chlamydia without having any signs or symptoms
• 70% of women and 50% of men who have Chlamydia have no symptoms.
• You can have Chlamydia for weeks, months or years without knowing it
• It is easily treated with antibiotics
• If left untreated Chlamydia can lead to infertility in both men and women.

This surgery offers free self testing for the 16-24 age group. For women this simply means taking a swab test, and men a urine sample. You can collect a pack from the front reception desk. If you prefer, a GP or nurse can perform the test for you.

Alternatively, you can visit the Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) clinic for the free test. Details of this clinic can be found on the sexual health Services page. Various pharmacies in Basingstoke offer this test - details are available via the Getiton website.

All sexual health services are confidential even if you’re under 16.

Midwife

If you want to book an appointment please call during clinic opening times.The surgery has a midwife attached. She is specially trained to care for mother and babies throughout pregnancy, offer advice and run clinics for antenatal monitoring. Please telephone the surgery for further information.

Health Visitor

We do not have a Health Visitor based at our surgery. If you need to contact a Health Visitor you can contact the Health Visitor team on 01256 376483 for advice regarding a variety of problems relating to the early years, for example: infant feeding, behavour management, sleep and eating problems. A message can be left on the answerphone at any time and someone will call you back when they are next available.

Community Nurses

Community Nurses visit those who are housebound through illness or disability. The community nurse can advise relatives and friends about caring for the elderly or infirm. There is a message book at the surgery if you need to contact the community nurse which is checked regularly. Please try to phone as early as you can if you need assistance. The community nurses are available on 01256 810683, 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday.

Travel & Holiday Health

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. Please book your appointment via reception on 01256 396500 and complete the Travel questionnaire below which should be sent to us prior to your appointment. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because some travel vaccinations are not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore become a chargeable service.

Obtain a European Health Insurance Card from the Post Office if you are travelling in Europe. This will entitle you to free or reduced cost medical care within the EU. Community Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Service

Your Doctor may refer you for a test called Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. This is an examination used to look inside the lower part of the bowel. This will be done under the care of Hampshire Health. This is a new organisation created to provide health care services in our area. It is particularly focused on providing services in the community which may previously have been done at the hospital.

Hampshire Health is a partnership of local GPs with Assura Medical. Your doctor, by being a part of Hampshire Health, has a business interest in the Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Service.

Private Psychiatry

Dr Mark Slaney, a private Consultant Psychiatrist, has his base at the Beggarwood Surgery. He sees patients here and at other locations in and around the Basingstoke area.

Many of the patients he sees are referred by him to Mr Bas Chaudhri for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and this also takes place at the surgery.

Both Dr Slaney and Mr Chaudhri are very experienced across the range of psychiatric conditions although most of their patients suffer from depression and/or anxiety. The majority have private medical insurance. The age range seen is 17-75 years.
